Some common switch terms
Actuator : A movable part of the switch that causes a change in the electrical configuration of the switch
Resistance Load : A load in which the voltage and current are in phase, not involving motor, capacitive
Contact Resistance : The resistance, usually in milli-Ohms, measured across a closed contact pair
Dielectric Strenth : The ability of an insulator to withstand a voltage without arcing across its surface
SP : Single pole
DP : Double pole
DPDT : Double pole, double throw
Inductive Load : A load in which the initial current during contact closure is less than the steady-state current, and greater than during contact opening
In-rush : The initial high level of current that occurs during contact closure
Insulation Resistance : The electrical resistance between insulated parts
Mechanical life : The number of actuation of a switch without electrical load
Momentary Action : A switch position where the actuator returns to the starting position when the actuation force is removed. Also known as spring return
NC, Normally Closed : contacts are closed when the actuator is in free position
NO, Normally Open : contacts are open when the actuator is in free position
PA66 : Polyamide 6/6, or Nylon 66
PC : Polycarbonate, usually for illuminated actuator
Pole : The number of separate circuits that can be operated by a switch at any time. A single pole switch has one closed circuit at a time, while a double pole has two.
Q.C, Quick connect terminal : A flat tab or blade terminal to accept push-on female wire connectors
Snap Action : Fast transfer of contacts from one position to another
Withstand Voltage : The ability of an insulator to withstand a voltage without arcing across its surface
